Fort Hunter, New York

Fort Hunter, New York is a hamlet in the town of Florida, Montgomery County, New York, on the Mohawk River at Schoharie Creek. Fort Hunter may possibly also be known as "Lower Mohawk Castle".
Fort Hunter was a fort and the location of a Mohawk settlement prior to the American Revolution.
In 1711, Peter Schulyer ordered the construction of a fort containing a chapel and mission house along the Mohawk River. Queen Anne herself donated a set of communion silver to the mission.
The fort was the location of one of the two major Mohawk settlements. The Mohawk name was Tiononderoga.
It is the site of the old Schoharie Crossing aqueduct, which crosses Schoharie Creek into the hamlet.
