[edit] History

Forest School originated as Woodley Hills Grammar School in 1957 because a new school was needed to facilitate for the boys in Winnersh. It became a comprehensive school in 1974. It has been a Business and Enterprise College (BEC) since 2003 and was appointed by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust as the "Enterprise Hub School for Berkshire" in 2006.

The current Headteacher is Keith Quine, who replaced Stanley Grue in 2001. The school was founded by Walter G. Jackson (also the mayor of Wokingham in 1953). He was the first headmaster of the school.

The School has been under the spot light of the national press over the years.

In the early 1980s a teacher was stabbed in a lesson, this didn't provoke the moral outrage that would ensue now but was luridly covered by several papers, including the fornt page of the Daily Mail.

On the 16th October 2003 five students from the school were on BBC news for taking Viagra in their lunch break. The news story also reached the USA where it was in the blunders section of CNN news. The Sun newspaper said that "by the time the afternoon lessons began, there was no hiding what they had done." [1]

On 5th Feb 2006 the school again met the headlines, in a less than favourable light. Stephen Hunt, the school's caretaker, murdered his wife Donna. Donna, the schools lab technician, regularly went drinking in Reading with teachers on a Friday night. Mr Hunt dumped her body on the school grounds, behind the school's mini bus. [2]

[edit] Academic results 2006

67% of pupils achieved 5x A-C grade GCSEs

The average UCAS score per candidate for A/AS-Levels was 272.2

[edit] National Teaching Awards

In October 2007, Mr Matthew Evans won the National Teaching Award for Enterprise.

[edit] Sport

In 2006 The Forest School U15 Football team won the National Cup. In 2007 The Forest School U16 Football team (identical to the Under 15 squad) were runners up in the National Cup, losing narrowly despite dominating the opposition. Proved by their Captain winning Man of the match, David Bellis, ahead of the opposing school's striker, who had scored a hat trick in the same match.

There have been a number of highly professional sportsmen who have studied at the Forest School, most notably, former Reading and England Under-20 side Nathan Tyson who was at Reading and now is playing at Nottingham Forest. Future sportsmen include Ashley Mitchell, Reading and Liam Abrahams, Great Britain trampolining at U18 level, both students from 2002 onwards.

[edit] Magistrates Mock Trial

For a while now, The Forest have entered a team into the Citizenship Foundation competition. In 2007, the team came 4th in the Reading heat, the case was a charge of animal cruelty.

In 2008, the team came first in the Reading heat, and are to go through to the regional final, at Reading Crown Court, on 17th May 2008.

The school also has a good rugby squad.
