The Fast On-orbit Rapid Recording of Transient Events (FORTE) satellite was launched into low Earth orbit about 8:30 A.M on August 29, 1997 on a Pegasus XL rocket. It was developed and launched by the Sandia National Laboratory and the Los Alamos National Laboratory as a testbed for technologies applicable to U.S. nuclear detonation detection systems. It has also been used to study lightning from space. FORTE is currently operating in a circular 800-km-altitude orbit.
