Fluke (novel)

Fluke is a novel by British novelist James Herbert. First published in 1977, it concerns a dog named Fluke.

Fluke is a dog who soon realizes that he used to be a man, the book follows Fluke's efforts to find out what happened to him and his journey to reunite with his wife and daughter. Along the way, he makes friends with a red dog named Rumbo.

This is the first time Rumbo appears in a James Herbert novel. In Fluke, he dies and comes back reincarnated as a Red Squirrel. Herbert later brings back Rumbo (still a squirrel) in his novel The Magic Cottage and again in his 2001 novel. Once, in this novel, Rumbo is a Red Fox.
