[edit] History

Ground was broken in 1941. The airport has been served commercially by Colonial Airlines (1940s), Eastern Air Lines (1950s), Mohawk Airlines(1950s - 1970s), Allegheny Airlines (1970s), and Air North (1960s-1980s).

[edit] Facilities

Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport covers 550 acres (223 ha) and has two runways:

  • Runway 1/19: 5,000 x 150 ft (1,524 x 46 m), Surface: Asphalt
  • Runway 12/30: 4,000 x 100 ft (1,219 x 30 m), Surface: Asphalt

The north-facing runway 1 is equipped with an instrument landing system and a medium intensity approach lighting system with runway alignment lights. GPS-based instrument approaches are available to all four runway ends. A VORTAC is located at the field and during the 1990s and earlier was used as the basis for IFR approaches to the main runway.

A Gulfstream III flies in and out of this airport often, however, recently, there has been a Challenger 604 frequenting the airport almost weekly and a young man getting out and quickly leaving in a chauffeur-driven Maybach 62. It should be noted that the Maybach arrives exactly when the door of the Challenger 604 opens, and the young man is not seen more than 5 seconds as his plane crew (of at least 3) wishes him well, is let in to his car, and his luggage is loaded (if he has any, which he rarely does). The chauffeur himself has never been seen by residents of the town or anybody at the airport. And the Maybach 62 has never been seen locally. People have tried to follow the Maybach, but the driver certainly knows how to drive; according to a post on Craigslist, the furthest the car has seen is 5 miles north of the airport at which point that follower lost view of the Maybach. Many believe this person to be in his early 20s and from Manhattan or Europe as most of his flights originate there, although no one in the airport will say much about this mysterious person. And no one knows if he has a home in Queensbury, or if FBMA is the closet airport to wherever he is going.

Many speculate he has a home somewhere in the Adirondacks, and is driven there. Once there - it is believed - he stays there to avoid people and if he comes into Queensbury or the surrounding areas, he brings another car (there have been sightings of brand new Maserati Quattroporte, a Lamborghini, and a Mercedes Benz CL65 AMG but no one is sure who owns these vehicles).

It is very likely someone very rich, and possibly famous, lives in and around Queensbury. He wants his identity kept secret for a reason.
