Flixster is a free online database of information about films and actors. It includes social features such as the ability for individual users to review and rate films and to compare their ratings with invited friends to assess compatibility in film tastes.

Started in January 2006, the site administrators avoided heavy promotion until November 2006 in order to improve the service.[1] Between November 2006 and January 2007, the number of daily page views by Alexa Toolbar users rose from fewer than 20 million per day to around 50 million per day.[2]

As a consequence of this rise in popularity, the website has been discussed on numerous Internet blogs. More mainstream commentators are also starting to mention the site.[3]

[edit] Emailing

Per industry standard,[5][6][7][8] Flixster provides the option of importing existing contacts from address books in Gmail, Yahoo!, AOL, and MSN accounts[9]. If the user chooses to do so, he or she is asked to log in and provide the password for the account and then select individual contacts from the address book. Invitations to become friends on Flixster are sent to all contacts selected by the user.

Flixster's on-site messaging and privacy policy states that Flixster does not retain email account logins and passwords, and only uses the information provided to help users to invite their address book friends.[10]

[edit] The Flixster Team

These administrators oversee the forums to ensure suitable language and topics are used, control the movies and actors that are submitted and publish skins that users have made to make their pages interesting. There are many skins currently available, and more are constantly being added.

[edit] Facebook

In June 2007, Flixster created the "Movies" application on the popular social utility, Facebook. Movies is one of the most popular applications and claims over fifteen million users on Facebook alone.[11]

[edit] Feedback

Flixster has been praised for its copious amount of content.[1]
