FlaggedRevs is a MediaWiki extension written by Aaron Schulz and Joerg Baach. It allows for greater control of page content and end-user display.

[edit] Background

As Wikipedia has grown, credibility has become more and more important – including what is shown to anonymous visitors when they visit the site (logged-in users make up only a small fraction of pageviews). FlaggedRevs would allow trusted users to control which version of a page is seen by the general public. This would stop vandalism to pages (and to templates and images) from being seen.

[edit] Terminology

[edit] User groups

  • Editor: Can give pages a basic rating, this may be given out liberally, or even automatically
  • Reviewer: Can rate pages at any level, should be manually granted

[edit] Reviewing options

Those in the 'editor' and 'reviewer' user groups have a reviewer's widget at the bottom of the page (when viewing the page) that allows them to set and change information relating to the stability and quality of the page. By default, the options are:

  • Accuracy: Definition
  • Depth: Definition
  • Readability: Definition

However, any number of options can be used for any purpose.

[edit] Older proposals

  • "Sighted versions": A basic check, free of vandalism, may or may not include a basic fact check. This could be split into sub-levels if desired.
  • "Quality versions": High-quality, probably associated with a process like WP:FA, WP:GA, or some of the A-class ratings that some projects use. Could also be split into sub-levels.

[edit] Components

  • Special:Stableversions: Lists all revisions of a page that have been marked as stable
  • Special:StablePages: List of pages manually configured to show the stable version as the default page to unregistered users (though this can be set as the default)
  • Special:Stabilization: Used to change the version of pages that unregistered users see (stable or current)
  • Special:Unreviewedpages: List of articles that do not have a stable revision set, or that have revisions that need review
  • Special:Reviewedpages: List of articles that have a revision marked as stable
  • Special:Log/userrights: The log of all manual rights changes, which would include changes to "editor" and "reviewer" rights
  • Special:Log/review: Log of all revision flagging
  • Special:Log/stable: Log of all changes to what version of pages is seen by unregistered users

[edit] Configuration options

The FlaggedRevs extension offers a wide range of options for configuration.

[edit] Assigning editor / reviewer

  • Allow users to add themselves via Special:UserRights
  • Add the right to the autoconfirmed user group (an account older than four days)
  • Manually assigned by admins and/or bureaucrats

[edit] Autopromotion

The 'editor' right can also be set using an autopromotion system. Unlike other autopromoted usergroups (like autoconfirmed), this can be manually removed. The available options are:

  • Days since account creation
  • Total edit count
  • The user must have at least X edits that are Y or more days apart
  • Exclude deleted edits from edit count
  • User has a confirmed email address
  • User has a userpage
  • Minimum size of userpage
  • Number of article edits in the past 30 days
