The University of Florida compared to the Ohio State University

The University of Florida was founded in 1853 by, Florida governor, Thomas Brown. The University of Florida was placed in Gainesville due to it being a small city and the mayor’s offers of a water source and maybe an off site campus. The mayor never expected the university to be placed there. Soon after the university was already starting classes Florida went under hard times. The Mediterranean fruit fly lowered the state’s citrus production, causing it to lose a lot of money. Then Florida was hit by a category 5 hurricane which wiped out the rest of the state’s economy. But after WWII Florida’s population increased dramatically which got Florida back on its feet. The University of Florida is one of the few colleges known as a Public Ivy League school. The University of Florida is second in Merit scholars, behind Harvard University. In 2002 it was first among public schools in bringing in National Achievement Scholars. The University of Florida is home to many different schools, one of the main ones being the Warrington College of Business. Included is the Fischer College of Accounting. The Warrington College of Business is in the top 30 of all the rankings and is 12th in Marketing. The University of Florida has a strong reputation in Athletics. The Florida Gators have ranked in the top 10 athletic departments in the nation for the past 19 years straight. Since 1968 there have been 118 former Gator student athletes represent 27 different countries in the Olympics, earning 76 medals, 39 of them being gold. The football team has one of the nation’s toughest stadiums to play in, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium AKA The Swamp. Steve Spurrier (former Gators’ coach and heisman winner) gave it that nickname in the early ‘90s. He said “A swamp is where Gators live. We feel comfortable there, but we hope our opponents feel tentative. A swamp is hot and sticky and can be dangerous.” The Swamp has been named the toughest place to play by many publications, one being EA Sports’ NCAA Football franchise for the last two years. The Ohio State University was founded in 1870. OSU opened its doors to students in 1873. OSU was originally placed in a faming community on the northern edge of Columbus and was an A&M college until 1878, when it moved to Columbus. The Ohio State University has had many famous alumni including former Tennessee Titans tailback, Eddie George. Also there were three different astronauts. Charles Bassett, Nancy Currie, and Robert Henry Jr. The first African American astronaut. Ohio State has one of the top athletic departments in the nation. Currently all OSU teams are ranked in the top 25 in their sport with two top fives and 4 top tens. The Ohio State University is full of many traditions ranging from the Buckeye Leaves to the Victory Bell. The Victory Bell was a gift from the ’43, ’44, and ’45 classes. After every victory it is rung by the Alpha Phi Omega. This has been happening since OSU’s win over California in 1954. In conclusion the University of Florida and the Ohio State University aren’t so different. They’re both top academic and athletic colleges. They’re both rich with tradition and pride. Now the world is just waiting for these two colleges to collide in the grid iron (or court).

FCS Service Project Nicholas Weston

I did my 5 hours of community service, for my service learning project, at Children’s Hospital Behavioral Health Clinic. My volunteer was my mom, Laura Weston. When I was there I helped her file papers, close files, and deliver mail. We had to file the files of patients that the doctors were done with. They were filed in alphabetical order. They had a separate room with 8 or 9 different file cabinets. We also had to put some files in the right place that some people had put in the wrong place. This took about 2 hours of the time to get all of them filed. Next I helped her deliver mail to some people’s mail boxes. This didn’t take long since all the mail boxes were all right beside each other and there wasn’t much to do. It probably took about 30-40 minutes to finish this. Closing all the files took the longest since it was a busy day. We had to close all the files of the patients the psychologists had seen that were done seeing them. It took about 2-3 hours to finish closing all of them. It wasn’t very fun, and it got really boring some times. I’m sure I won’t ever want to go in to this field of work when I grow up.
