[edit] Broken thumbnail on pages
the /image:Flag of the United States.svg isn't working on a lot of pages. Hamdeer 22:09, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a4/Flag_of_the_United_States.svg/22px-Flag_of_the_United_States.svg.png appears to be a 0 byte file. I wonder what the best way to purge it and get a new thumbnail generated. --Pmsyyz 22:15, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
- I did a purge on it; I think it's okay now. Alanhwiki 22:22, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
- Is this another one of those Image Nazi mass deletions over free use or some bullshit? Don't worry, I have a shitty digital camera at home, so I can take a pic of the flag and upload it as another quality user-contributed image under GFDL.
-
- Didn't work. Well, sorta worked. The image is now no longer 0 byte, so it is there, but all over WP the mini USA flag is linking strangely through the 'flag' template. I have absolutely no idea what, why, or how to fix. Looks system wide though, so something is going on. Would like to know how it is resolved here once the problem is corrected. - It seems to be happening to other flag images. The United Kingdom flag fails too in articles. And so does South Africa's. There's a few other images in general that fail. Did they update the way you have to cite these things or something? Cause this seems like a fairly recent thing that they stopped working. Cpesacreta 05:05, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

- And as soon as I say that it starts working again for me... So did UK's. South Africa's is still iffy... Maybe this is just something with the Wiki network?Cpesacreta 05:11, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

- Yup, looks like the problem was corrected (at least as far as I can tell at the moment). Certainly weird, maybe it was a WP maintenance thing. If not, maybe a very elaborate, though creative, vandal ... but I doubt it. Me thinks maintenance gnomes instead --Trippz 05:34, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

- So i checked over on Wikimedia Commons Village Pump, and apparently it has something to do with the Disk Space for thumbnails. And it seems unless they figure out a way to fix it soon this could last. and not just with the flags but with thumbnails all across the site. Cpesacreta 06:12, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Simplified construction of star
I was playing around with this in a text editor and have a proposal of a way to simplify the star even further, less than a third of the number of bytes of the current one. Here's what I have:
<polygon id="star" points="0,-1 .587785,.809017 -.951057,-.309017 .951057,-.309017 -.587785,.809017" transform="scale(.0308)" fill="#fff"/>
It's based simply on the sines and cosines of 72, 144, 216, 288, and 360 degrees. That gives a star of radius 1, we need it diameter 1, so that's why the scaling factor is halfed to .0308. It's visually identical, but simpler code. It's working in Firefox 2 and Safari, but I didn't want to just edit it without asking about it, because a lot of work seems to have gone into the previous versions, and there may be technical issues in the SVG I'm not aware of. • Anakin (contribs • complaints) 15:45, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Pantone colours
Okay, I see this a lot on Wikipedia. The flag probably has the correct PANTONE colours, but PANTONE colours are not the same as their on screen representatives. Real inks are not the same as colours on a screen—especially reds. I think that the flag should be coloured with on-screen equivalents (ie true red, not a faded bright maroon colour)Tkgd2007 (talk) 04:14, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
