  • Text from the State Department:

U.S. FLAG LOWERED IN RESPECT

As a sign of respect and condolence for the Chinese nation, the flag of the Consulate General was lowered to half-staff for 24 hours when the airplane carrying the remains of those killed in the accidental bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade arrived in Beijing on May 12. [1999]

(By order of the President and Secretary of State, similar measures were undertaken at the Embassy in Beijing and the Consulates General in Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Shenyang.)
