Flatwoods

Flatwoods refers to an ecological community in the Southeastern coastal plain of North America. Flatwoods are a fire maintained ecosystem dominated by

• longleaf pine Pinus palustris,
• slash pine Pinus elliotii,
• saw palmetto Serenoa repens, and
• gallberry Ilex glabra.

A number of rare animals are typical of this habitat including

• Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis),
• Flatwoods Salamander (Ambystoma cingulatum) and
• Striped newts (Notophthalmus perstriatus).
