Flatwoods

Flatwoods refers to an ecological community in the Southeastern coastal plain of North America. Flatwoods are a fire maintained ecosystem dominated by
- longleaf pine Pinus palustris,
- slash pine Pinus elliotii,
- saw palmetto Serenoa repens, and
- gallberry Ilex glabra.
A number of rare animals are typical of this habitat including
- Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis),
- Flatwoods Salamander (Ambystoma cingulatum) and
- Striped newts (Notophthalmus perstriatus).
