The flag used by the breakaway Republic of South Ossetia is a tricolour, top to bottom white, red, and yellow. The flag was prescribed by the Constitution of 26 November 1990 and confirmed by the Regulation on the National Flag of 30 March 1992. The colours symbolize martial courage (red), moral purity (white), and wealth and prosperity (yellow). The flag is also used by the pro-Georgia Provisional Administrative Entity of South Ossetia, based in Kurta, which opposes the separatist government in Tskhinvali.

The flag is almost identical to the flag of North Ossetia-Alania; the only difference is the width to height ratio.

In blazons, the flag is described as Per fess Argent and Or, a fess Gules.
