I thought at first that this should be merged with fire protection, but, on reflection, I suppose it is fire safety that results from proper fire protection.... I edited to bring it in line with the other articles on similar topics and how the laws really work. There were some inconsistencies.--Achim 00:54, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fire prevention & fire safety not really the same topic

I was interested (surprised?) to see that fire prevention redirects to fire safety. Fire safety seems to more aptly encompass the end-state achieved by fire prevention, fire protection or some combination of the two, and is not in or of itself entirely synonymous with either. This view comports with NFPA 550: Fire Safety Concepts Tree, which sets out in branching logic tree form all of the various combinations of decisions/actions required to achieve any particular fire safety outcome.

The article also seems pre-occupied with the U.S regulatory framework. This almost suggests that people would have no interest in fire safety beyond complying with legal requirements. That defies logic, as many people undoubtedly give fire codes little thought, but nevertheless achieve reasonable levels of fire safety evidenced by the lack of fire ignitions or at least the successful management of those ignitions that do occur.

I'd like to see fire prevention established as a genuinely separate topic, and will enthusiastically author or co-author an initial draft of an article. Such a draft would provide an poortunity to elaborate the various methods and strategies for avoiding fire ignitions, without any particular emphasis on legal requirements.

== Vulnerability Assessment of community ==

I think there is not enough discussion or I should say suggestion on vulnerability assessment of a community for fire. In the third world countries where there are many slums and fire is a common problem for them, this sort of discussion will be helpful. Sayeed- BUET, Bangladesh
