The school started in 1973 as Child Enrichment Center offering kindergarten and daycare. In the first few years of its existence it expanded to include all of the elementary years through the sixth grade, and was renamed First Methodist School to more accurately reflect the school's association with the church.

In 2005, a middle school was added to extend the program from 3-year olds through the eighth grade. First Methodist School campus now extends to two locations, the original Broadway Campus and the new addition, the Asbury Campus.
