First Landing at Cape Henry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The First Landing project is a showcase of the inception of early American history, when the Virginia Company sought to establish an English colony in the Chesapeake region. The pristine shores of Fort Story provide 40 acres of ideal natural setting.
The First Landing Foundation, in cooperation with Fort Story and Fort Eustis, has provided the opportunity to bring an authentic reenactment to fruition. Formed by a group of local residents, the First Landing Foundation is proud to present The Historic Villages at Cape Henry. The Foundation offers an educational and engaging tribute to the first English explorers of the New World and the Native Americans of the Chesapeake region.
[edit] MISSION STATEMENT
The First Landing Foundation is committed to the identification and illumination of the early history of Virginia Beach, Virginia and its environs. The Foundation seeks to discover and promote the indigenous, colonial, and later American history of the region so that current and future generations may benefit from an understanding of the cultures that have gone before.
As the Foundation's operations grow, diversify and flourish, it will dedicate excess proceeds from its activities to the preservation and restoration of the historical, cultural, and environmental resources of Fort Story and Cape Henry. By doing so, the Foundation intends to promote tourism of the sites under its stewardship for the benefit of the City of Virginia Beach and related communities.
First Landing Foundation Four hundred years ago on April 26, 1607, the English settlers who would go on to found Jamestown made their First Landing at Cape Henry. The Historic Villages at Cape Henry have been carefully recreated on Fort Story and you are invited to travel back in time and watch history come alive.
A Native American village welcomes you as you travel through beautiful wooded, winding paths full of cultural history. On trails amid live oak trees, journey into the past as tribal members build canoes, cure meats, and share stories of ancestral history. As you complete your journey through the village, a clearing reveals a 17th century colonial outpost. History truly comes alive in this village
