- In Ian Hamilton Finlay, the image illustrates the technique of Finlay's work, which is entirely visual and could not be understood without an example.
- In Concrete poetry, the image a particularly clear representation of the intended effect of the work of the concrete poetry school, of which Finlay is one of the most prominent members. Since concrete poetry is defined by its use of visual effects, an illustration is necessary.
