[edit] Kennel Club?

The Wikipedia definition of a kennel club is the following:"A kennel club (known as a kennel council or canine council in some countries) is an organization for canine affairs that concerns itself with the welfare, promotion, and maintenance of more than one breed of dog." The FDSB is a kennel club though it stuck with it's traditional name as a stud book. It organizes Field Trials, registers dogs, maintains DNA informaion to promote the health of the breeds that it registers, control out-crosses to ensure the vitality of the breeds. It is a properly categorized as a Kennel Club despite the misleading name. The AKC itself was originally a stud book but changed the name. The FDSB chose not to change the name despite being involved in similar activities. --Counsel 22:53, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

My guess would be that the AKC changed its name to reflect its conformation show emphasis. I'm going to move this to category:dog breed registries. What you've described is a registry and thanks for your input as it has led me to work on the kennel club page. In registers I would like to include independent terrier and hunt registries, and the Greyhound Racing Authorities and the like. I certainly mean no disrespect to any of those, far from it, and I think a distinction has to be made between that and a KC, one of whose functions is the maintenance of a registry. I think this discussion should probably be cross posted but dangnabit if I can't remember where the original discussion was....Quill 06:43, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
