Here is no talk about Ferranti effect. Why?!

Computers - did Ferranti in fact _design_ the MEG, or only develop it (into the Mercury)

Meg was designed and built by Manchester University, and then Mercury was its commercial version (using a core store rather than Williams tubes). The only machine ever designed by Ferranti themselves was Orion (which needs a mention on the site, which I will shortly do). I believe Hugh McGregor Ross was the guiding force behind the paper tape code.
