Federation is a 2003 Star Trek novel that ties the crew of the original Enterprise (NCC-1701) with the crew of the Enterprise D (NCC-1701D). The crews meet in the event horizon of a black hole while both of them are on very similar missions. The crew the original Enterprise is transporting Zephram Cochrane while the Enterprise D crew is transporting an life-form that needs Cochrane to sustain its life.
