Fannia scalaris

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fanniidae canicularis (Fabricius), known as the "lesser housefly" and "latrine fly" is a species of the family Fanniidae that contains over 260 species of flies. This species is similar to the "housefly" (Musca domestica) but is smaller, more slender, darker, and has only three longitudinal stripes on the thorax, as opposed to four in the housefly.

This and other Fannia species can cause accidental myiasis of the rectum in humans. It is believed that myiasis occurs as a result of a Fannia fly laying eggs on the anus and larvae crawling in to the rectum to begin development. There are no serious medical consequences of this parasitic fly.[1]
