[edit] Trophy finalists getting byes to round 1 of the FA Cup.........?

I was having a look at the Encyclopedia of British Football, published in 1983, and it states that (at the time) the previous season's Trophy finalists got byes to the first round of the FA Cup. I'd never heard of this - anyone know if it was actually true, how long it lasted for, and id it worth mentioning in the article............? ChrisTheDude (talk) 20:32, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

It was definitely true - it was a carry over from when the Amateur Cup finalists were exempt (not strictly speaking "byes") to the First Round Proper. Two other non-league clubs were also exempt to the First Round, based on something like "past performances". I think it ended when all the Conference Clubs began to be exempt until the Fourth Round Qualifying - something like 1988 at a guess? - fchd (talk) 21:13, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
