Baseball and Cricket
While the exact origins of baseball are unknown, most historians believe that it is based on the English game of rounders. Baseball became popular in the United States in the early 19th century. In the 19th century, small town teams were formed to play baseball. In 1845, Alexander Cartwright made a set of rules to play the game of baseball by. The first recorded baseball game was in 1846, Cartwright and his Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York City lost to the New York Baseball Club in a game at the Elysian Fields, in Hoboken, New Jersey.
The English game, cricket, originated in the sheep-raising country of the South East, where the short grass of the pastures made it possible to bowl, or roll, a ball of rags at a target. The first recorded cricket match took place in Kent in 1646. By the late 1600’s, fines were actually handed out for those missed church to play cricket. The first written "Laws of Cricket" were established in 1744. The world's first cricket club was formed in Hambledon in the 1760’s, and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) was founded in 1787.
One difference between baseball and cricket is the shape of the field. Cricket has a circular field, while baseball has a diamond shaped field. Also in cricket, you roll the ball while you pitch the ball in baseball. The cricket bat in wide and flat. While the baseball bat in narrow and round.
One similarity of baseball and cricket is that both games use bats to hit the ball. Also, both games have innings. They are both played on fields or in stadiums. They both have relief and starting pitchers. Also, if the batter is hit with the ball throw by the pitcher he is awarded first base.
I would rather play baseball then cricket. I chose baseball, because it sounds like it is a faster paced game. Also, I am more familiar with the rules of baseball. Also, I like pitching the ball over-hand and you roll the ball in cricket. Baseball also uses smaller bats which is more of a challenge. Overall I think baseball is a better sport then cricket.
