Experiment in Terror is a 1962 crime film directed by Blake Edwards and written by Mildred Gordon and Gordon Gordon based on their 1961 novel Operation Terror. The film stars Glenn Ford and Lee Remick and is highlighted by Henry Mancini's score and the moody black and white photography.

A psychotic killer, "Red" Lynch (Ross Martin), uses a campaign of terror to force San Francisco bank teller Kelly Sherwood (Lee Remick) steal $100,000 from the bank for him. Despite his threat to kill her or her teenaged sister Toby (Stephanie Powers) if she goes to the police, Sherwood contacts the FBI, when agent John Ripley handles the case. Soon after, Ripley interview another woman (Patricia Huston), who implies that she's involved in some way in a serious crime, but before she can give Ripley the details, Lynch murders her.

The FBI identifies the criminal as Garland "Red" Lynch, with a record of convictions for statutory rape, forgery, criminal assault armed robbery and murder. They track down his girlfriend, Lisa Soong (Anita Loo), who has a 6-year old son who's had his hip replaced. Lynch is paying all the hospital bills and, because of this, Soong refuses to believe that Lynch is a criminal, and will not cooperate with the investigation. Still, Ripley manages to get some information about "Uncle Red" from the boy.

Lynch finally tells Sherwood to steal the money the next day, and then kidnaps her sister Toby to ensure that the teller will execute his plan - which is simply to put the money in her purse and walk out of the bank.

The climax of the film is a chase through San Francisco's Candlestick Park in the middle of a nighttime baseball game between the Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Experiment in Terror was filmed on location in San Francisco. The house used for the home of Kelly and Toby Sherwood was located at 100 St. Germaine Street.[1]

The film opened in New York on 13 April 1962.[2]

In the United Kingdom, the film was exhibited as The Grip of Fear.[3]
