No articles on shopping centers shall be written in order to promote or advertise a particular mall. Also, no articles on shopping centers shall be written with only basic information about location, tenants and operating hours, and contain no information that would be encyclopedic. Rather, these should be cleaned up if possible.

    • Super regional Shopping Centres

[edit] Assertion of notability

Always keep in mind: Wikipedia:Notability is not and never will be official policy. It, like all other Articles on Wikipedia, is constantly being edited and talked about.

Notability can be asserted for shopping centers through:

  1. Nontrivial inclusion in reliable third party published materials. (eg. Newspapers)
  • Nontrivial media coverage that is comprehensive, should deal with the shopping center as one of the the primary subjects. The listing of a shopping center in local newspapers and community information websites does not alone make the mall notable.
  • WP:N then goes forward to slightly contradict this by saying: "A topic is presumed to be notable if it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject."

[edit] Size Does Matter

DRV's show a number of opinions, but, are beginning to consistantly show that 1Million sq.ft. seems to be a tipping point. (see here)

[edit] Annexation's

If a Facility is deemed valuable enough by a city/township/etc to want to add its tax revenue to Gov't coffers, then there is notability to a large number of persons, the economic effect is a proof.[2] (wording???)

[edit] Local development

In some cases, Mayors or other persons of importance, discuss long term city/town revitalivations that begin with the redevelopement/expansion/improovment to an existing facility. With a WP:RS outlining this plan, or a historical timeline to proove this, notability is confered.

[edit] Assertions to be rejected

  1. Documents produced by the owner or developer of the mall itself should not be used as an assertion of notability. However, they can be used as supplemental source material for an article and to source basic facts (sq.ft, # of tenants, parking spaces etc.)
    • Internal documents can include reports, newsletters, press releases, magazines and websites published by the owner or developer itself, or any related affiliate or corporate entity it is part of. This applies even if originally self-published material is later reprinted in other sources.

[edit] Criteria for individual shopping centers

  1. Shopping centers are usually notable if the scope of activities is currently and/or historically large enough in scale to warrant multiple, non-trivial published works of credible and reliable secondary source material to be written about it, produced independently of the mall owner or developer. Malls at or larger than 800,000 square feet (74,000 square meters) of gross leasable area fall under this category in many cases since they are considered "super-regional malls." DRV's show a number of opinions, but, are beginning to consistantly show that 1Million sq.ft. seems to be a arbitrary tipping point. (Seen here) Such information should be nevertheless able to be verified by a third party source.
  2. If an individual mall can be clearly shown to have significant cultural, social and economic impact on the local and regional market area, as supported by multiple credible and reliable secondary source materials, and especially (but not exclusively) if such impact approaches a national level, the mall is considered notable. The article should discuss such impact in sufficient depth. See the guide to writing better articles to help you in forming an acceptable article.
  3. Malls which have verifiable historical or architectural significance are notable.
