Note on the date: the date 1540 in the painting (on the frame of the portrait of Lady Dacre's late husband Thomas Fiennes, 9th Baron Dacre) refers to the date of his execution for murder (1540 oldstyle). The painting itself is correctly dated to c. 1555-58 see [1] and discussions in Roy Strong, The English Icon (1969).
