Evisu or Evisu Genes is a Japanese designer clothing company that specializes in producing premium denim wear through traditional, labor-intensive methods.
The brand was founded in 1988 in Osaka, Japan, by Hidehiko Yamane.[1] The brand was originally called Evis (named after the Buddhist god of prosperity) but was eventually changed to Evisu.[2] The Evisu logo is a stylized seagull, and is still hand-painted onto some styles of jeans. They are also known for using japanese characters on their jeans. Evisu makes extensive use of heavy, premium-quality selvedge denim, produced on 29-inch wide vintage looms.[3][4]
The Jeans vary in cost between $150 - $1000 USD
In addition to jeans, the company also makes t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, shoes, and accessories. In March, 2006, the company and Yamane was reported to Tokyo District Public Prosecutor's Office along with another firm on suspicion of tax evasion. Yamane and the two firms stand accused of concealing more than 500 million yen of income as well as evading some 160 million yen in taxes over three years[5][6]
