European Computer Driving Licence

European Computer Driving License also known as International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) is a computer literacy certification programme provided by ECDL Foundation, a not for profit organisation.

The ECDL / ICDL certification is a globally recognized Information and Communication Technology and digital literacy certification.[citation needed] According to ECDL Foundation, the ECDL / ICDL certification is recognized and supported by governments, computer societies, international organizations and commercial corporations.[citation needed] In 2001, the ECDL certification programme was developed through a Task Force of the Council of European Professional Informatics Societies and was recommended by the European Commission High Level Group, ESDIS, to be a Europe-wide certification scheme.[1] In addition, this project receives funding and is indirectly supported by the European Commission through ESPRIT and the Leonardo da Vinci programme.[2]

The ECDL / ICDL certification is available in 148 countries and in 38 languages.[3] As of 2007, ECDL Foundation has issued more than 7 million ECDL / ICDL certificates.[4]

ECDL Foundation markets the ECDL / ICDL certification programme to people who need to demonstrate their full competence in the use of a personal computer and common computer applications and that they know the essential concepts of the Information Technology. Prospective Candidates are expected to have used computers and have seen some of the common software applications before. Programmes are available for Candidates with other skill requirements.

ECDL Foundation claims increased productivity and job prospects improvement as one of the benefits of the ECDL / ICDL certification, which is provided by a local Test Centre for a fee.

According to ECDL Foundation, ECDL / ICDL is a test of practical skills and competencies and consists of seven separate modules covering computer theory and practice. To achieve an ECDL / ICDL certification, the Candidate must successfully pass a test in all seven modules.
