Ethnic groups of Armenia and the South Caucasus in
1995.
This article focuses on ethnic minorities in Armenia.
[edit] Background
According to last census ethnic minorities in Armenia are less than 3% of population. Various sources suggest different numbers and even representatives of ethnic minorities are not informed about exact numbers. However migration waves from Armenia always included representatives of ethnic minorities, and as their leaders suggest migration will continue from Armenia despite considerable improvements of economic and political situation in Armenia.
[edit] Demographics
Armenia is the only republic of the former Soviet Union that boasts a nearly-homogeneous population. It is also the second-most densely populated post-Soviet state after Moldova. Ethnic minorities include Yazidis, Russians, Assyrians, Ukrainians, Kurds, Greeks, Georgians, and Belarusians. There are also smaller communities of Vlachs, Mordvins, Ossetians, Udis, and Tats. Minorites of Poles and Caucasus Germans also exist though they are heavily Russified. [2]
The Yazidis in Armenia are the largest ethnic and religious minority in the country.
[edit] Assyrians

The mixed Assyro-Armenian marriages are quite high on the percentage scale, this situation being also noted in the Diaspora with adjacent Armenian and Assyrian communities. Historically, the Assyrians have always been described as men of gallantry, nearly always siding with the Armenians in rebellious situations. Along with other Christian populations they have been the subject of genocide within the Ottoman Empire. The Armenian and the Assyrian nations have always been attached not only by confessional consensus, but rather by many centuries of collaboration and the correlative historical predestination. [2] |

[edit] Greeks
The Greeks of Armenia are mainly descendants of the Pontic Greeks, who originally lived along the shores of the Black Sea.
