Ethiopic Ocean
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ethiopic Ocean or Ethiopian Ocean is an older name for what is now called the South Atlantic Ocean, which is separated from the North Atlantic by a narrow region between Natal, Brazil and Monrovia, Liberia. Use of term illustrates a past trend towards referring to the whole continent of Africa by the name Aethiopia as well, as Ethiopia proper is nowhere near the Ethiopic Ocean. The term Ethiopian Ocean was sometimes in use as late as until the mid 19th century.
