Should this article be in the Catholic Church in Hungary category? The basilica and the archdiocese are already included. Alensha 22:33, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
You are right; it needn't and shouldn't. I'll remove it. --Adam78 23:02, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
The article is very informative however it seems to have been written as if it's a descriptive text for the Hungarian, e.g. "... yet devastating siege by the walls of the Vłíziváros Balassa Bálint died in action, who was the first poet of our Hungarian lyre who gained European significance..."
Though the city is in Hungary and there is no current Ottoman (or Turkish) claims (which would be funny, anyway), I don't think we can use the "liberation" for Hungarian reconquest of the city. Please consider it as a style issue rather than NPOV one. Turanyuksel 14:12, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
There are many POV statements in the article, especially anti-Turkish ones. Plus, there are weird statements like "In 1543 Sultan Suleiman I attacked the castle with an enormous army and countless cannons." This article should be re-written in a more Wiki way. --212.31.0.50 13:02, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] citations?
There are claims in the article such as -Turks killed people, destroyed all buildings, etc. Do you have basis for those claims? Or is it the infame of the name "Turk". I know the last Ottoman Turkish governor's grave in Hungary, written to his tomb by Hungarians "He was a heroic enemy, may he sleep in peace". And I don't think they would write such a thing for a representative of such tyranny as claimed in the article the Turks are. Respect.. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 85.101.10.137 (talk) 16:57, 11 February 2007 (UTC).
Actually the 140 years of WAR resulted in destroying almost the entire city, not the Turks by themselves. Hungarians took back the city a couple of times, and in a couple of months/years the Turks would allways take it back from the Christian forces. The constant war and bombardment killed almost everyone in the city and destroyed many buildings. According to a census of the time, Esztergom (and surrounding Esztergom county) was almost unpopulated by the end of the Turkish occupation. The Turks didn't destroy buildings, only statues of Christian saints in various churches, mostly in the St. Adalbert Church. They actually built spas, reinforced the castle etc. (By the way: I noticed that this article is a word-by word translation of a Hungarian book of Esztergom, but I can't find it right now, but I'm sure I read this exact text in Hungarian somewhere.) Ok, I've got it! this is an exact translation of the city's history section on esztergom.hu!!! (since then few parts of the text were changed here) I knew this was familiar from somewhere http://www.esztergom.hu/wps/portal//varos?docid=ADMR-6WQKVH (HUN)Villy 14:10, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
- As a copy-vio, the history text should either be drastically rewritten or started anew. Olessi 18:01, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Bridge
Why was the Maria Valeria Bridge only reconstructed in 2001? Was the relations between Slovakia and Hungary so bad as to not want a bridge in that interim period?
- Yes, and Esztergom was a clerical city, so it did not receive any support from the communist/socialist Hungarian government. It would of been suicide to even mention the reconstruction of the bridge in a time when the county seat was moved from Esztergom to a little mining-town. And they say that the Slovak politicans were affraid that this would further streighten the bond between Hungarians in the two countries. This proved to be true, I mean about the relations of the two cities. (HUN)Villy 22:34, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
