Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano is a multi-use stadium in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. It is currently used mostly for football matches and also has facilities for athletics. The stadium has a capacity of 40,000. It was built in 1997 for the Central American Olympic Games. This stadium was built by Jerónimo Sandoval, mostly known by "Chombo Sandoval", he was the organizer of the 1997 Central American Olympic Games in San Pedro Sula, which caused many controversies.
[edit] Notes
Before leaving office, San Pedro Sula's former mayor, Oscar Kilgore, attempted to change the name of the stadium to José de la Paz Herrera, a noted Honduran soccer coach and the only coach to have taken Honduras to a world cup. The move was heavily opposed by Club Deportivo Marathón and eventually abandoned.[citation needed]
The capacity crowd is 55,000 but FIFA allows only 50,000 or less due to the risk of accidents. Normally in an official match for the National team the printed ticket amount is between 45,000 to 48,500; in a league match the tickect number is between 20,000 and 40,000. However some spectators do get the access to the match without ticket, so it is fair to say the stadium has a capacity crowd of 50,000.
