An esplai is a voluntary association without profit spirit that works for the education of the children in its free time. It derives from the scouting, and it is popular in certain zones of Spain from the decade of 1960. In 2006, the esplais have over 35,000 members in Catalonia, where also the Scout Movement exists.
Esplais are less hierarchic than scouts, but they work of similar form. They make games, manualities, discussions and trips. There is a pedagogic work behind that promotes the integral development of the child. Typically, an esplai centre can have about 100 cildren and 10 educators.
