I am not an expert on this subject.I am simply trying to convey a question through the net. My question is, how does a language die?
I know that the earliest period recorded in history when man invented a system of writing their spoken language was sometime in 5000 B.C. They were called the Sumerians, who were actually the earliest community of people who established a civilization in Mesopotamia now called Iraq. I dont know if anybody still living today knows how to speak the language of the Sumerians. I know that the English language being spoken by the English speaking people today began sometime in the 3rd century by a small Germanic tribe.
Latin, which was the universal language at the height of the Roman empire is now dead. The Latinos and the Italians of today speak a different language from the way Latin was spoken in ancient times.
The theoretical question I would like to pose is, would it be possible for people to speak one common language in the future? What language would that be and would humans still be humans when that time comes?
