Talk:Ernst Thälmann Island

Why does Germany need to make a claim for the island? Wouldn't the incorporation of the DDR into the Federal Republic bring the island in with it? --Daniel C. Boyer 19:12, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
The GDR did not join as a whole nor has there been a formal union between two states. Six reestablished federal states (Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Mecklenburg-West Pommerania, and reunified Berlin) joined the Federal Republic in accordance with the Grundgesetz (Basic Law (constitution)) which then was extended to include them. Germany's (Federal Republic of Germany, to be precise) constitution states now that there are no other parts of Germany, which existed outside of the unified territory, that had not acceded. Thus, Ernst-Thälmann-island can not be part of Germany. 86.136.9.60 20:58, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
