Ernie Isley (Alberta politician)

Ernie Isley is a former school principal and provincial and municipal level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1979 to 1993. He is the current mayor for the town of Bonnyville, Alberta and has served that post since being acclaimed in a by-election on March 7, 2006.

Isley served for seven years as Principal for Bonnyville Centralized High School before running for provincial office.[1]

[edit] Provincial political career

Isley was elected to the Alberta Legislature in the 1979 Alberta general election. He won the electoral district of Bonnyville defeating four other candidates to hold it for the Progressive Conservatives.[2] He won his second term and a larger plurality facing two other candidates to win the 1982 Alberta general election.[3] His third time running for office in the 1986 Alberta general election, would see him win his third term with a reduced but comfortable plurality. He would again defeat two other candidates, his strongest challenger was New Democrat candidate Tomas Tucker.[4]

Moore would run for a fourth term in office in the 1989 Alberta general election. His plurality and personal popularity would continue to slide as he faced two strong candidates.[5] He ran for a fifth term in office in the 1993 Alberta general election but was defeated in a hotly contested race by Liberal candidate Leo Vasseur. Isley won the second highest popular vote of his career but was defeated by just over 100 votes.[6]

Isley was acclaimed as the Mayor of Bonnyville, Alberta in a by-election held on March 7, 2006. He was returned by acclamation in the 2007 Bonnyville municipal election.[1]
