[edit] Premise

Nottingham is told from the perspective of the Sheriff of Nottingham, who serves John of England, who replaced his brother, Richard I of England. The sheriff strives to do right, but he is caught between two wrongs -- obeying the corrupt and unpopular king, and fighting against an outlaw, Robin Hood, who encourages pubic rebellion.[2] Robin Hood is portrayed as less virtuous and the Sheriff of Nottingham is portrayed as more noble than previously depicted. Robin Hood and the sheriff become involved in a love triangle with Maid Marian.[3]

[edit] Production

In January 2007, Universal Studios acquired a spec script written by Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris, creators of the TV series Sleeper Cell. The pair received a seven-figure deal for the purchase. Actor Russell Crowe was cast into the role of the Sheriff of Nottingham with a salary of $20 million against 20%.[3] The following April, director Ridley Scott was hired to helm Nottingham.[4] In June, screenwriter Brian Helgeland was hired to rewrite the script by Reiff and Voris.[5] Producer Brian Grazer described Nottingham as the Gladiator of Robin Hood films, having the same adrenaline rush.[2] Locations were sought in North East England including Alnwick Castle, Bamburgh Castle, and Kielder Forest. A portion of filming was intended to take place in Northumberland. As a result of the WGA strike, production was put on hold.[6] Filming will begin once the WGA strike and a potential SAG strike are settled.[7] Scott wants to begin production in 2008 for a release in 2009.[8]
