My username refers to the Erielhonan tribe, once of the south shore of Lake Erie. I'm not a member (it hasn't been extant since the Iroquois confederacy wiped them out in the 17th century C.E.), but I hail from that part of the world. My irl name is Drew.

I've always liked reading the encyclopedia, since I was a small kid. I've done some lexicography research, and have smatterings of knowledge on a broad range of topics. Probably because I read encyclopedias.

Elsewise, I currently live in San Francisco, and have lived in Portland, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Erie, Pennsylvania, Richmond, Virginia and State College, Pennsylvania, in the past. I hang out a lot at fark.com and participate in their photoshop contests, but under a different handle.

[edit] Inclusionism

Wikipedia is not paper. Wikipedia is a warehouse for knowledge, and a jumping-off point for research. To be this, we must include all topics and complete all articles. Obviously this is a goal and a process, and in a world of constantly evolving information it can never be perfect.

By its very nature, Wikipedia must be large and constantly-improving. I believe that there should be an article for everything, every concept, and every person. As an inclusionist and eventualist I also advocate completionism. This is why I've decided to become involved in WP:1.0 as a way to help bring a critical mass of articles up to publication quality.

While I understand the rationales behind the philosophies of exclusionism and deletionism, I believe that inclusionism is closer to the spirit of Wikipedia, as well as more representative of the technologies that Wikipedia employs. Those philosophies essentially advocate removal of content that isn't yet pristine, and ultimately want to keep Wikipedia small and 'perfect'. Contrarywise, it's my opinionated opinion that wikipedia will continue to meet its potential if editors and administrators tend to be forgiving and open-minded rather than exclusive and quick to flag articles for deletion.

That said, it seems to be that best practice for any editor in a post-n00b phase of wikivolution to flag your new articles as stubs until you can flesh them out, to seek references and citations for content (and if you don't have them, post a message on the article's talk page to ask for help!), and to help other editors do the same by improving upon articles (stubs particularly) that they have submitted. And if you like tagging articles, try tagging for improvement or references rather than deletion, and give the original editor (or other interested parties) some time to get it done. Unless they are blatant advertisement, vanity, nonsense, or otherwise complete bollocks; but even then keep in mind that there may be some nuggets of NPOV usefulness in an otherwise pointless article, and deleting the article means that an editor who might want to build on those nuggets wouldn't have them available. Tagging for deletion is a meal best served as rarely as necessary (I also mangle aphorisms in my spare time).

In short: there's space in Wikipedia for an article on your auntie who's won blue ribbons in 14 counties for her fantastic rhubarb pie (definitely a notable achievment, imho), as well as the best damn article on Austro-Afro-Antarctico-Amer-Asian Auto Association ever published.

Huh. I think I know why Wikipedia cares so much about vanity userboxes. I spent some time creating a few userboxes, linking them to categories, and reading up on policy around them, which taught me a lot about getting around and getting along in this place. It was a great jumping off point for learning about the tech and the culture here. Guess that proves that even adults learn best through play.

Userboxes that are hosted in my user namespace are listed here.
