Juan Carlos Cuervo - Civil Engineer MSc.CE.
Born in Bogota (Colombia), Juan received his M.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the City University of New York in 2007, and his Bachelor’s Degree from LA GRAN COLOMBIA UNIVERSITY in Bogota. Currently, he is working as a project engineer at the New York City Department of Transportation in the East River Bridges Division. Juan has been in charge of coordinating works related to the rehabilitation of the Manhattan Bridge.
Juan started working as a civil engineer in 1995, when he worked as a Chief Engineer of Costs & Budget at OIKOS SOCIETY OF INVESTMENT, a firm dedicated to land development and housing construction in Bogota. In 1998, he joined the INSTITUTE OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT, where he was the project engineer supervisor in charge of leading the professional teams responsible for designing, building and launching the Axis of the Avenue Jimenez, and its articulation with TRANSMILENIO (Bus Rapid Transit system), which was implemented along this project. In 2001, Juan began working for the FINANCIAL FUND FOR DEVELOPMENT OF CITY PROJECTS in Bogota, where he was the engineer in charge of coordinating and supervising architects, environmental engineers, civil engineers, and landscapers in the design and construction of the ¨Parque Lineal Albina¨, an urban park and bikeway located at downtown Bogota. In the period from 2003 to 2004, he was one of the project leaders in the “bottom-up” construction of the Hotel Royal Radisson in Ciudad de Panama in Panama, a tower of 33 floors located in the middle of the city’s business center.
In 2001, Juan, among other professionals, was a recipient of a special mention during the XVIII Colombian Biennial of Architecture in Cartagena (Colombia), for their active participation in the development of principles and standards to be incorporated in all urban projects developed in Bogota from 1998, and particularly, during the administration of the Mayor Enrique Peñalosa. In 2008, he was awarded with the Council of University Transportation Centers Award, in Washington DC, USA for his outstanding Masters Degree project on the Development of a Strategic Management Model for Combined Fixed and Moving Transportation Assets.
