Engineer In Training

[edit] Canada

In Canada, an EIT is someone who has obtained a degree from an accredited institution that qualifies for registration with one of the provincial or territorial engineering professional associations, but has not yet achieved the additional requirements (like relevant supervised work experience) to become accredited as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).

[edit] United States

In the United States of America, an Engineer In Training (EIT) is someone who has qualified for, taken, and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (the FE exam). Graduation from an ABET-accredited degree program speeds up the certification process but is not necessary. EITs are also known as Engineering Interns (EI).

Once the FE Exam has been passed, the EIT is then certified to work in an engineering profession. Upon completing a certain amount of work experience under the supervision of a Professional Engineer (P.E.), the EIT is then eligible to take the P.E. exam — at which point they will be a certified Professional Engineer.

While being a certified EIT will help get an engineering job, it is not typically required to do engineering work. All work done by an EIT must still be checked and certified by a P.E.
