Which Hague Peace Conference? 1899 or 1907? -- Ortonmc 04:20, 10 Jan 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Korea or Joseon?

Didn't Gojong conclude his monarchical career as the head of the "Korean Empire" (대한제국)? If so, then it seems like the article's former location, at Gojong of Korea, is preferable. Am I missing something? -- Visviva 16:38, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I changed it partly because there were more links to "of Joseon" than to "of Korea", so it was largely a practical matter (though it brought the entry into line with the articles that I'd been editing; if I'd been doing them in reverse order, I might have decided differently...). Ye, shouldn't it be "Gojong I of Korea" or something like that, seeing as he was "Emperor of Korea", not "of Joseon"...that was the family name. That'd be like calling Emperor Akihito of Japan, "Akihito of Yamato". -Alex, 12.220.157.93 02:00, 11 February 2006 (UTC).

just to clarify, joseon was not the family name, but the name of the country. see Names of Korea for how koreans named their country; they didn't name it after the dynasty family name as the chinese did. see also korean naming convention, linked at the top of this page. [edit] Gojong of Korea

The title of this article needs to be changed.

The title of the Myeongseong article is clearly "Empress Myeongseong," the title she is known by Koreans and the title she used during her reign as Empress of the Han Empire (which was established in 1897 as the official elevation of the status of the Kingdom of Joseon to Han Empire.) Therefore, this should be titled as "Emperor Gwangmuje," the title Gojong used as Emperor of the Han Empire.

He was also never styled as Emperor Gojong. Gojong was his temple name and was used as King Gojong during his reign as King of Joseon. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thepowederoom (talkcontribs)

You have a point, but note that all other Korean ruler articles use temple names (where known) rather than contemporary or era names. Please see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean)#Royalty and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (monarchs) for more background information. If anything, it seems that it is the Myeongseong article which should be renamed. -- Visviva 11:38, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
I'm sorry. I'm going to have to disagree. Gojong officially elevated around tweleve kings before him to the status of Emperor during his short lived Han Empire. However, they were never officially known by their dynasty names whereas Empress Myeongseong was and still is amongst Koreans. Empress Myeongseong and Emperor Gwangmuje were known by their dynasty names during their latter part of their reigns (and in Myeongseong's death as well). I believe it is only fit for the Gojong of Korea to be changed to Emperor Gwangmuje. Many Korean textbooks refer to him as Emperor Gwangmuju from 1896-1919, Gojong being used for his years as King of Joseon. He resigned as an Emperor and passed the crown to his son as an Emperor. We don't say Consul Napoleon but rather we say Emperor Napoleon because that was the title he achieved fame with and the title he installed as ruler of the French Empire. It's the same logic with Gwangmuje.
Also, if it won't be changed to Gwangmuje, it should be at least changed to King Gojong or Gojong of Joseon, not Korea. The idea of Korea without a monarchy did not come into existance until after Japanese colonialsm. - the powderoom

[edit] POV tag

I added the POV tag because the article was plainly badly one sided and needs revising by someone that knows more about the subject. Was somebody trying to pull some trick or something? they said the Empress was raped 9 years after her article says she died?
