Empty Sky (song)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Empty Sky is a song by Elton John with lyrics written by Bernie Taupin. It is the title song of his first album, and also the opening track. The musical structure is very varied throughout the song, as isn't really reminiscent of any songs from his later career. It opens with a congas beat, then single piano notes, before seguing into a straight 2/4 rock standard beat with electric guitar. The verses are sung in a style that could remind of Mick Jagger. The lyrical meaning could remind of Skyline Pigeon, as it's basically the same imagery.

According to the "scrap"-book included with the LP release of "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" containing snippets of Elton's diary, the song was composed on January 7, 1969.

The song is one of his longest, being 8 minutes 28 seconds long.
