The first EMC E3A was demonstrator #822 completed on September 12, 1938. See A. J. Kristopans EMD Serial Number Home Page http://community-1.webtv.net/ajkristopans/PASSENGERUNITS/. Regular production started in March 1939 as noted in the article and in the Second Diesel Spotter's Guide. The demonstrator was sold to KCS as their #1 on 7/31/39. See Diesel Era Nov-Dec 1999 for more E3 data. --SSW9389 14:57, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

ACL E3A #501 built 11/19/39, was wrecked before delivery to ACL, returned to EMC and rebuilt as an E6A. Diesel Era Nov-Dec 1999. --SSW9389 15:00, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Just a historian's note here, but all GM locomotives built prior to 1941 were built by the Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC). The Electro-Motive Division (EMD) was formed on January 1, 1941 with the merger of the Winton Engine Company with EMC.
