Emanem Records
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Emanem Records is an independent record label based in London specialising in free improvised music. The label was founded in 1974 by Martin Davidson assisted by Madelaine Davidson. The main purpose of the label was to document the London free improvisation scene. It has become a prolific source of both archival recordings (notably its extensive documentation of the work of John Stevens and the Spontaneous Music Ensemble) and new recordings of improvised music.
Musicians who have recorded for Emanem include Derek Bailey, Clive Bell, Steve Beresford, Karl Berger, Tony Bianco, Ed Blackwell, Bobby Bradford, Gail Brand, Anthony Braxton, Chris Burn, John Butcher, John Carter, Kent Carter, Eugene Chadbourne, Nigel Coombes, Lol Coxhill, Rhodri Davies, Terry Day, Paul Dunmall, Phil Durrant, John Edwards, Simon H Fell, Milo Fine, Frode Gjerstad, Malcolm Goldstein, Morgan Guberman, Barry Guy, Sylvia Hallett, Masashi Harada, Paul Hubweber, Charlotte Hug, Matt Hutchinson, Michael Keith, Caroline Kraabel, Steve Lacy, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Paul Lovens, Frank Lowe, Paul Lytton, Marcio Mattos, Albrecht Maurer, Neil Metcalfe, Phil Minton, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Maggie Nicols, Steve Noble, John Oswald, Evan Parker, Roland Ramanan, Howard Riley, Paul Rogers, Jon Rose, Roswell Rudd, Olaf Rupp, John Russell, Paul Rutherford, Mark Sanders, Elliott Sharp, Ian Smith, Roger Smith, Larry Stabbins, John Stevens, Pat Thomas, Alan Tomlinson, Roger Turner, Phillipp Wachsmann, Trevor Watts, Veryan Weston, Kenny Wheeler, Alan Wilkinson, Stevie Wishart, Tony Wren and many others.

In the 2000s, Emanem joined forces with Eddie Prévost's Matchless label to present Freedom of the City, an annual improvised-music festival in London. Though its size and scope vary from year to year depending on funding, it has continued as an annual event, with many of the recorded performances issued on either Emanem or Matchless.
