[edit] Trains bypassing Ely station?
On the National Rail map, there appears to be a direct link between the lines to Peterborough and Norwich, bypassing Ely station. This link exists physically, as you can see on this map: there is a loop allowing trains to run directly from Peterborough to Norwich (or Kings Lynn) without reversing. But does any passenger train ever use this loop? The National Rail map does not usually include freight lines with no passenger service. Mtford 03:41, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

- One timetable shows the 15:53 from Norwich Central Trains service to Peterborough and beyond on a Sunday, which is very fast but does NOT call at Ely. No others so 1 train per day from Norwich to Peterborough and beyond only, and not te other way. Simply south 10:43, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

- The above train (15:53 on Sundays) is now operated by East Midland Trains. According to the timetable this service does not stop at Ely. Presumably, therefore, it uses the link mentioned above (since otherwise the service would somehow need to change direction - as indeed other services on the Norwich to Peterborough route do by leaving Ely station in the same direction from which they entered).
