AWM Caption: A PORTRAIT OF NFX76584 SISTER ELLEN SAVAGE, GM., AUSTRALIAN ARMY NURSING SERVICE, THE SOLE SURVIVOR OF TWELVE NURSING SISTERS WHO WERE ABOARD THE AUSTRALIAN HOSPITAL SHIP "CENTAUR" WHEN IT WAS SUNK BY ENEMY ACTION OFF THE QUEENSLAND COAST ON THE 1943-05-14. IT WAS DURING THIS TRAGEDY THAT SISTER SAVAGE WON THE GEORGE MEDAL.
