Eleusa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eleusa (Greek: Ἐλεούσα — tenderness or showing mercy) is a type of Eastern Orthodox icon of Theotokos, the Virgin Mary, depicted with the infant Jesus Christ. The Theotokos of Vladimir and Theotokos of Pochayiv are well-known examples of this type of icon. The icon symbolizes the sacrifice of Jesus as the highest sign of God's love for a people.
Eleusa was also used as epithet for describing and praising Virgin Mary in Eastern Orthodox tradition.
