Is there any word on why it is considered to be in Oregon instead of Washington, despite it being closer to the Washington border? --Android Mouse 01:57, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

• As far as I know the island closer to the Oregon side. I think the article says this. The state line between WA and OR seems to be right down the middle of the river (although I'm not 100% sure of that, that's just how maps seem to show it). --W.marsh 02:07, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, looks like I misread the article. I had thought this sentence, "It is a few hundred feet from the Oregon side of the river, much closer than to the Washington side." meant it was a few hundred feet from Oregon and much closer to the Washington side. --Android Mouse 02:14, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

FWIW, I tripped over that sentence too, though I ended up concluding the island was closer to Oregon. Maybe a wee rewrite is in order. Congrats on the DYK though--I never heard of this island until the other day when it popped up on the new Oregon articles list. Katr67 02:44, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

What is the origin of the name "18 mile" (as in the real estate listing) or "Eighteenmile" (as in this wikipedia article)? — Athaenara ✉ 03:25, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

• Or eighteen mile. It's really just 18 miles from something in the river, that's how river islands are often named. Sure enough, this island is 18 miles from the The Dalles Dam, [2] which prior to damming was sort of obstruction or navigational difficulty, hence the name of the island most probably. So it was presumably called orally "eighteen mile island" by river travelers, and there's no standard way of writing that down. I'd add it to the article if I had a clear source for it. --W.marsh 03:31, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
