[edit] Birthdate

Jack P. Maddex, Jr., in his biography of Pollard, The Reconstruction of Edward A. Pollard: A Rebel's Conversion to Postbellum Unionism (Chapel Hill: U. of N.C. Press, 1974) gives Pollard's birthdate as 27 Feb 1832 (p.4), and gives the following citation: Alexander Brown, The Cabells and Their Kin: A Memorial Volume of History, Biography, and Genealogy (Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1895), 219, 406-7, 433-34; Michael Houston, "Edward A. Pollard and the Richmond Examiner: A Study of Journalistic Opposition in Wartime" (M.A. thesis, American University, 1963), pp. 27-30. To Houston's reasons for dating Pollard's birth in 1832, one may add his age as given in U.S. Census Manuscripts, Schedule 1: Population, Lynch Ward, City of Lynchburg, Campbell County, Virginia, 1870, p.56. —LonelyPilgrim 02:17, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
