[edit] Summary

Obverse of Edward VIII coin

The coins of English (later British) monarchs alternate facing left and right with succeeding monarchs. Edward VIII, whose portrait on coins of his reign should have faced to the right, refused to have them do so. He insisted that they face to the left. No coins with his portrait on them were actually issued during his reign. However, all of the patterns that were prepared for issue with his portrait on them show him facing to the left.

[edit] Fair Use

  1. This image is to illustrate an exception in British coinage (see above).
  2. It is of low resolution.
  3. No coins of this type were ever minted, hence questions of counterfeiting do not arise.
