[edit] No Child left behind
From the 5th grade to the 9th grade my son had severe difficulty working with other children due to social anxiety, We went to several specailists and they told us he needed to be in a more one on one situation. They stated he was very intelligent and that he needed more stimulation. The school desidced to place him in a learning disabled class with limited functioning children who had several behavioral problems. My son asked questions above the level of the other students and asked for more information and was told to be quiet and that is not the topics at hand ( he was asking about the String theroy, Space time , and black wholes, social structures. Needless to say because he was not on task in their eyes they failed him, but through all the failed classes, with out assistance he Graduated with all F's his 6th 7th 8th and was then moved on to 9th grade. He ended up dropping out of school because he was told he social did not fit in and that he would end up a bum on the street. We discovered after the 9th grade that he was a rapid cycling bipolar and that his needs in school were not met, through the counselors, through the IEP and through the teachers They labeled him a havioral problem, when he was the most polite and obident child. He wants to learn get his high school diploma and go to college to become a physis. I feel that the system failed him and no matter how much I fought the school they continues to label him a behavioral problem and kept pushing him from grade to grade.
